THE THINGS WE VALUE ULTIMATELY DEFINE WHO WE ARE AND ALSO DETERMINE WHERE WE WILL GO. AT EASTLAND, WE HAVE FOUR CORE VALUES THAT GUIDE EVERYTHING WE DO:
we believe that god has spoken through his word--the bible. Because the bible is god's word, we believe that it has the final authority on how we should live and the way we are to interact with the culture around us.
the bible tells us that ultimately we are all separated from god because of our sin and that the penalty of this sin is death. the bible explains that Jesus didn't come simply to be a good example of morality for us to copy. Jesus came to earth because we have a relationship issue with god that can only be fixed by the removal of our sin-barrier. the gospel is simply the truth that Jesus died in our place, absorbing the effects of the penalty we deserved. no one is so bad that they can't receive it and no one is so good that they don't need it. everyone from the most "righteous of saints" to the most morally corrupt of society are in need of this free gift of repaired relationship between us and god. this impacts humanity in two ways:
1. we respond to god with love and gratitude for all that he has done for us.
2. we respond to our community out of a desire to demonstrate this love and acceptance to others.
If the gospel is our message, the culture is our language. We will not compromise eternal things, but we also know that the way those things are fleshed out will be different depending on the environment in which they are found. Currently, Eastland exists in a thriving art-centric culture of East Nashville. Therefore, we desire to communicate the gospel in a way that is contextually appropriate.
There's a saying that "the gospel came to you on its way to someone else." We believe that when the gospel transforms someone's life, they can't help but to share it with others. Member mobilization is a crucial factor to seeing the gospel reach the furthest of places. This means that the gospel expression in each person's life will be unique and powerful as God incorporates our passions, skills, and experiences into his global story unfolding over the course of history.
